Orange Egypt supports African startups with investment
Orange Egypt is making big moves in Africa's startup scene with a $52.7 million investment to drive a youth-focused tech revolution.
This comes hot on the heels of the telco signing a deal with the Egyptian government to roll out the second phase of its 5G licensing.
So far, over 40 startups have bagged funding, with most being Egyptian companies. It’s a boost for Egypt’s growing entrepreneurial ecosystem and a step closer to cementing its spot as a top startup hub in Africa.
Egypt’s startup game is already strong, ranking as the third most funded country in the MENA region. The numbers speak for themselves: in 2022, Egyptian startups closed 143 funding deals worth nearly $766.7 million, outpacing the $606.79 million raised the year before.
Plus, with over 2,100 startups employing more than 50,000 people, the country’s ecosystem is one of the top 10 emerging startup hubs globally.
The Egyptian government is all in on this. Since launching initiatives like Egypt Ventures in 2017, they've been backing startups to drive innovation and growth in the tech space.

Orange Egypt’s latest move only adds fuel to this already blazing fire, paving the way for more opportunities and a stronger startup culture across Africa.
Uber driver to content creator, fleet builder!
Not many of us have it all figured out right after secondary school — I’m no exception. But somehow, ending up at a good school made a big difference for me.
I was at an event recently, and one of the panellists said something that stuck with me: school isn’t there to teach you everything; it’s more about helping you discover yourself. That hit home, especially when I think about people like Adebayo* who always had clarity.
Adebayo always knew he wanted to help people, so he studied Social Work at the University of Lagos. Graduating eight years ago, he was certain about his passion for improving lives.
But here's the kicker: social work isn’t exactly a high-demand field in Nigeria. Opportunities have been hard to come by, so now he’s saving up to pursue a master’s abroad, where the field is more respected.
In the meantime, he’s been hustling as a driver for Uber and Bolt. What started as a side hustle to get by has turned into something bigger. After six years, he owns his car and has plans to expand into a fleet. On top of that, he’s picking up tech skills to level up his business and open more doors.
6 years as an Uber driver, now training to be a content creator to fund his fleet dreams. It’s a grind, but he’s making it work. Read more about his journey in Oluwanifemi’s latest story.
MTN Nigeria gets new CMO and CTO
MTN Nigeria has seen some leadership reshuffling in recent months. Back in June, Adia Sowho stepped down as Chief Marketing Officer after serving for nearly three years.
Her departure left a gap that was temporarily filled by Ugonwa Nwoye, the telco's Chief Customer Relations Officer, who took on the acting CMO role while the company sought a permanent replacement.
Onyinye isn’t new to MTN — she’s been around since 2001 and has led various top roles, including boosting MTN’s fixed broadband subscriber base to over 3 million.
With a degree in Geology, an MBA from the University of Manchester, executive training from places like Harvard and Stanford, and currently pursuing a doctorate at Cranfield University, Onyinye’s credentials are nothing short of stellar.
That’s not all. Yahaya Ibrahim has also stepped up as the Chief Technical Officer (CTO). Joining MTN in 2002, Yahaya has been a key player in launching Nigeria’s first 4G and 5G networks and laying down over 37,000 kilometres of fibre optics.
With degrees in Statistics and Telecommunications, plus training from top institutions like Harvard, he’s ready to keep MTN ahead in the tech game.
With this duo at the helm, MTN Nigeria looks poised to reach even greater heights… but only time will tell.
