Chowdeck X Shoprite
  • Chowdeck, an on-demand food delivery service in Nigeria, has announced the addition of Shoprite to its online shopping stores, expanding into the grocery space.
  • The partnership will allow Chowdeck users to order from the retail giant and have their products delivered to their doorsteps.
  • This service is available to users in these four major cities in Nigeria: Lagos, Ibadan, Abuja, and Port-Harcourt, with plans to add more cities soon.

Previously, Chowdeck only offered food delivery services. However, this partnership will see the online food delivery startup enter the grocery industry.

Launched in 2021 by Femi Aluko, Olumide Ojo, and Lanre Yusuf, Chowdeck is a Y Combinator-backed on-demand food delivery startup that caters to consumers, vendors, and riders. On-demand logistics enables swift delivery by allowing users to place orders as needed, beating the time constraints of traditional delivery methods.

In November 2023, Chowdeck reported it had crossed $1.2 million in monthly gross merchandise value (GMV). According to the CEO, Femi Aluko, as of October 2023, Chowdeck has over 60,000 active users, crossing the 7,000 mark they had in January.

Charles Dairo, CEO of Beezop, a business management software, stated in August that a partnership between Chowdeck and Shoprite would go a long way in solidifying Chowdeck’s presence. “If Chowdeck pulls off a partnership with Shoprite, they’ll become untouchable,” he said.

Chowdeck’s Head of Sales, Kennedy Offor, acknowledged that Chowdeck took it up as a challenge and has successfully pulled off a partnership, listing Shoprite on its software logistics application.

Recently, Chowdeck partnered with notable food chains like So Fresh, Eat ‘N’ Go Africa — the master franchise of ColdStone—and in August 2023, partnered with Chicken Republic.

Moreover, this is not the first time an online food delivery platform will partner with Shoprite. In September 2023, Glovo, an online food delivery platform, sealed a partnership with Shoprite to offer delivery services to users' doorstep in states where they are active.

While Chowdeck and Glovo seem to be penetrating the Nigerian online delivery market, Bolt Food, another online food delivery company, has exited the space today, December 7, 2023.
