The News

  • Meta has introduced two new tools which allow eligible content creators to earn money in Kenya.
  • The features, accessible starting today, August 6, 2024, will include in-stream ads and Facebook ads on reels to be placed before, during or after content videos whether prerecorded or live-streamed.
  • According to the multinational tech platform, this new monetisation tactic will help Kenyan video content with support in over 30 languages globally including Swahili.

Meta’s global partnership lead, Africa, Middle East and Turkey (AMET), Moon Baz revealed that while this will empower eligible content creators in Kenya to earn money, this will also set a high standard for creativity across the world with its family of apps a one-stop-shop for all creators.

To access these new features, content creators must adhere to Facebook's partner and content monetisation policies, which include an 18+ age restriction. For in-stream ads, creators need at least 5,000 followers and 60,000 total watch minutes in the past two months, among other requirements.

In-stream ads can appear before, during, or after on-demand videos, whether prerecorded or live-streamed. These ads include pre-roll ads, mid-roll ads, image ads, and post-roll ads.

This development comes after President Ruto had proposed the idea in December 2023 following a trial programme involving qualified creators in Kenya.

In June 2024, Meta approved Facebook monetisation for content creators in Nigeria and Ghana after previously excluding the two countries. Other countries whose creators share this ad-earning feature include Egypt, South Africa, and Rwanda.

At least 52% of Kenyans,15 and older, use the Facebook platform, a total of 31.96% of social media users on Facebook and 7.56% of users on Instagram among other social media platforms.

What's more, in February 2022, the parent company of Instagran, WhatsApp, and Facebook announced that content creators in 20 sub-Saharan African countries, including South Africa, Seychelles, Senegal, Rwanda, Nigeria, and Kenya, would create and earn from Facebook Reels and in-stream ads.
