In 2018, Justin Kan, co-founder of Twitch, made this now famous statement: “First-time founders are obsessed with product. Second-time founders are obsessed with distribution” to emphasise the importance of getting your products into the hands of customers and retaining them.

Years later, founders still struggle with getting customers for their startups, with many shutting down as a result. At Pitch Friday this month, the conversation will revolve around practical strategies that founders can use to attract and retain customers for their startups.

Our guest is Joshua Chibueze, Chief Marketing Officer of Piggytech, the parent company of Nigerian fintechs, PiggyVest and Pocket. This session is targeted at founders of all stages and marketing professionals working with startups.

Founded in 2015, PiggyVest was inspired by a tweet sharing how the user had saved 365,000 using a savings box. A few days later, the team had the first version of the product ready, and it has only gotten better since then.

With over 4 million customers, PiggyVest is the largest provider of digital savings solutions in Nigeria. While its dominance is already impressive, it has achieved it without spending tons of money on marketing and gaining loyal customers along the way.

In 2022, it acquired Abeg, a social commerce platform, which it rebranded as Pocket. Both fintechs have over 6 million users, and PiggyVest has paid out over 1 trillion to its users since its inception.

Chibueze will be sharing how PiggyVest has achieved this feat, including some of the mistakes and lessons the team has picked up along the way.

This month’s edition of Pitch Friday will be held at Zone Tech Park, Gbagada Expressway, on Friday, April 12, 2023, by 3pm. Attendance is free, but attendees are encouraged to register by following this link.
