The news:

  • Sistema.bio, a Nairobi-based biogas technology company, has raised $15 million in fresh funding to expand its sustainable energy solutions globally.
  • This funding will allow the company to scale its operations, expand into new markets, and advance its regenerative agricultural solutions — providing clean energy and regenerative agriculture solutions to smallholder farmers worldwide.
  • The funding round was led by ElectriFI, managed by EDFI Management Company, with contributions from existing investors, including Chroma Impact Investment, KawiSafi Ventures, and AXA IM Alts.

Sistema.bio, known for its biogas technology that converts animal waste into clean energy and biofertiliser, has made strides in supporting smallholder farmers.

The company says its biodigesters, which provide renewable energy for cooking and electricity, have already been installed in over 12,000 farms across 31 countries.

With a strong focus on Africa, the company operates in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Malawi, and Nigeria, benefiting over 100,000 farmers in sub-Saharan Africa.

Additionally, Sistema.bio has partnered with Engie Access, an off-grid energy service provider, to introduce its biogas digesters in Zambia and Mozambique. This partnership aligns with the company’s mission to enhance energy access in rural areas and boost farmers' productivity through renewable energy solutions.

The company aims to help decarbonise agriculture by mitigating carbon emissions and promoting sustainable farming practices.

CEO Alexander Eaton emphasised the company's commitment to empowering one million farmers by 2025 and reducing 1% of global emissions by 2030.

Beyond providing clean energy, the company’s systems contribute to climate change adaptation programs by reducing CO₂ emissions and offering biofertilisers to increase crop yields.

The $15 million raised in this funding round builds on the momentum from its Series B funding in 2022 and positions Sistema.bio for further growth in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

As the world continues to seek solutions to climate change, this investment underscores confidence in Sistema.bio's ability to scale its transformative impact. The company's vision is to drive sustainable farming and clean energy access for smallholder farmers while contributing to global carbon mitigation efforts.
