  • NetOne, a telco in Zimbabwe, has launched 5G base stations to offer improved Internet speeds and support the growing demand for reliable, high-speed Internet services across the country.
  • This follows the recent launch of Starlink in the country, which has intensified competition within the telcos sector.
  • Engineer Raphael Mushanawani, NetOne Group Chief Executive Officer, stated that the telco ensures that urban and rural areas are connected via high-speed data networks, creating new opportunities.

The launch of 5G services will pave the way for innovation in the country's economy, including farmers using smart technologies to optimise food production while conserving water and energy.

He highlighted that “Industry and service providers will be revolutionised by automation and efficiency. Innovation will be transformed through digital classrooms and cities, becoming smart hubs that serve citizens more efficiently.”

Mushanawani confirmed that the telco has also deployed 275 4G base stations across the country as part of the broadband phase 3 model, which was launched on September 20th, 2021.

Vice President Kembo Mohadi also stated that this development demonstrates the country's commitment to a digital future by improving nationwide connectivity, stimulating innovation, increasing productivity, and ensuring citizens have access to vital services.

He emphasised that this initiative aligns with the country's National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1), which seeks to establish it as a knowledge-driven economy.

Beyond launching the 5G network, NetOne has collaborated with Hikvision and Satewave Technologies to provide Smart Surveillance and Smart Security solutions for homes and businesses. These systems are developed to deliver advanced protection.

NetOne also introduced a Smart Hybrid Power Solution, providing a sustainable and efficient alternative to traditional power systems. Powered by an AI engine, this solution ensures real-time power optimisation and provides extended autonomy — an essential improvement for base stations often affected by power cuts and vandalism. This solution is expected to improve network reliability and resilience.

Showing interest in healthcare through telemedicine, NetOne, in partnership with ZimSmart Villages, is deploying virtual hospitals in the Midlands, Mashonaland, and Harare.

Initially using e-Band Microwave Technology, these facilities will now rely on the 5G network for faster, more reliable medical services, especially in rural and underserved areas.

Since the official launch of Starlink in Zimbabwe, telcos in the country have been forced to improve their services to stay ahead of the competition. For instance, ISPs like Liquid Home have slashed prices, while state-owned TelOne partnered with Eutelsat’s OneWeb to offer satellite Internet to fend off competition.

Meanwhile, telcos in the country could now be fined up to $5,000 for delivering poor service under new regulations. This is included in Statutory Instrument 154 of 2024, which revises the Postal and Telecommunications (Quality of Service) Regulations.
