MTN Ghana’s service revenue increased by 31% in H1 2024

  • Reporting its performance for H1 2024, MTN Ghana has announced a 31.2% year-on-year increase in service revenue to GHS8.1 billion, compared to GHS6.15 billion generated by the telco in the same period in 2023.
  • In H1 2024, MTN Ghana’s mobile subscribers grew to 28.4 million, with an additional 0.6 million customers added in Q1. Active data subscribers reached 16.4 million, and active Mobile Money (MoMo) users increased by 16.2% to 16.5 million. Revenue from MoMo grew by 44.8%, while digital revenue surged by 59.4%, driven by video, gaming, and ring-back tones.
  • MTN Ghana paid GHS 3.9 billion in direct and indirect taxes during the year’s first half. Including other payments, these expenses accounted for 52.0% of the company’s total revenue of GHS 8.11 billion. Additionally, the telco invested GHS 2.8 billion in network quality, coverage, capacity, and IT systems.

MTN Ghana disclosed that it is in the final stages of long-term agreement discussions with Telecel

MTN Ghana CEO Stephen Blewett said, “We intend to actively pursue the national roaming agenda in collaboration with Telecel to establish a long-term infrastructure sharing agreement. We will continue to enhance our leading connectivity asset base and service offerings provided to our customers.”

The telco also reported significant progress in localising Scancom PLC (MTN Ghana) and MobileMoney Limited. By the end of Q2 2024, Scancom PLC’s local ownership stood at 27.9%. Following this increase, the regulator confirmed Scancom PLC’s achievement of the 25.0% localisation requirement for its 4G license. 

“We are committed to further localising Scancom PLC and MobileMoney Limited, and we will continue to work closely with regulators and other relevant stakeholders towards achieving our goal,” the CEO said.

Meanwhile, Ghana is set to launch 5G mobile technology in September 2024. In collaboration with Radisys Corporation, the government plans to launch affordable 5G mobile broadband services nationwide by the end of 2024.

Moreover, MTN Ghana is classified as a Significant Market Power (SMP). In July 2024, the National Communications Authority (NCA), responding to public concerns about overpriced internet data, stated that classifying MTN as an SMP aligns with its mandate of upholding fair competition and protecting consumer interests.
