The news:

  • Google has rebranded its AI chatbot, Bard, to Gemini to reflect its mission to give users direct access to its AI models.
  • The search giant described Gemini as its largest and most capable AI model, revealing that its Pro 1.0 model is already available to users in over 40 languages and more than 230 countries and territories.
  • In a post published on Thursday, February 8, 2024, the CEO of the US multinational technology company, Sundar Pichai, also revealed that Google is launching Gemini Advanced, a premium version with features to aid seamless collaboration for its users.

Gemini Advance is expected to provide users in over 150 countries and territories unrestricted access to Ultra 1.0, Google's largest and most capable cutting-edge AI model.

Currently available in only English, the company says the advanced model is more proficient at performing highly complex tasks, such as coding, logical reasoning, responding to nuanced instructions, and collaborating on creative projects. Google assures that it’ll add more languages as it progresses.

Gemini Advanced is going for ₦20,500 ($14) per month, powered by a new AI Premium Plan that is part of Google One — its subscription service — with nearly 100 million subscribers. Subscribers will get the first two months of trial free of charge and 2TB of storage space, among other benefits.

Additionally, Google One AI Premium subscribers will soon receive a confirmation to incorporate Gemini in Google Workspace apps, such as Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets and others.

Recall that in December 2023, Google marked a significant milestone with the start of the Gemini era, aimed at making AI more useful for all. Per the tech giant, the move would spark innovation across many text, image, audio, and video benchmarks.

Starting today, Gemini and Gemini Advanced will be available in English on the all-new Gemini app on Android and the Google app on iOS in English in the US alone. The mobile experience will reach Nigeria next week, also in English.

The Gemini mobile app allows users to type, talk, or attach an image to any request while on the go. Google describes the mobile app as an essential first step towards creating a “true” AI assistant that is "conversational, multimodal, and helpful."

On bias and unsafe content concerns, Google says it has built safety into all its products in strict compliance with its AI principles.

Google’s Gemini rivals OpenAI’s ChatGPT in the generative AI industry. At $20 per month, GPT-4, the premium version of the OpenAI chatbox, is priced higher than Gemini Advanced.
