  • X has expanded to include audio and video features for Android users to become an Everything App.
  • According to Enrique Barragan, a Senior Software Engineer at X, all Android users can receive calls, but only paid users can initiate them following an app update.

In 2023, X's CEO, Linda Yaccarino, announced that the service would add video calls as a new feature. According to her, users can use the feature without disclosing their phone numbers to anyone on the platform.

I updated my X app to confirm this development. Following the update, a prompt appeared, urging me to review the settings.

To access the feature that enables audio and video calling, a user must first navigate to settings, then privacy and safety, and then direct messages after updating the X app to the most recent version.

Additionally, they can manage who can call them by selecting from a menu that includes contacts in their address book, users they follow, and verified users. Users can choose multiple options from this list.

Meanwhile, to reduce unwanted calls, users must message an account at least once before receiving calls from them. There is also an option to enable call privacy, which prevents IP addresses from being revealed to contacts during a call.

Elon Musk has stated that the social networking app is "an accelerant to creating X, the everything app," since he acquired it in October 2022.

Since then, there have been several changes to the social media app that was once known as Twitter, including adding premium features and monetisation.

Musk’s plan for X is to become similar to WeChat, a Chinese social media platform. He recently said, “You basically live on WeChat in China because it’s so usable and helpful to daily life, and I think if we can achieve that, or even get close to that at Twitter, it would be an immense success.”

Meanwhile, in August 2023, X obtained money transmitter licences in seven US states, enabling the platform to operate as a money service business (MSB) and facilitate cross-border transactions.
