The news:
- The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has released vetting rates for ads on social media.
- The Council will charge between ₦7,500 ($16) and ₦100,000 ($217) to vet the social media ads before it goes live.
- This is coming after ARCON said in 2022 that advertisers will be required to obtain pre-exposure approval for all adverts.
In December 2022, ARCON said it received complaints about the advertisements and marketing communication activities of skit makers, comedians, influencers, bloggers, and other advertising stakeholders in digital/online media.
According to its statement, it resolved that advertisers will be required to obtain pre-exposure approval of all adverts under the Nigerian Code of Advertising Practise and the ARCON Act No. 23 of 2022.
This means it will vet all advertisements before they are made public on social media and other digital/online media.
A news report by Nairametrics on Thursday, May 11, 2023, revealed the vetting rates ARCON will charge advertisers.
Normal vetting for social media, which will take seven days will cost ₦7,500. But to cut it down to two days, the rate will increase to ₦70,000 ($16). Those who want their ads vetted in a day will pay ₦100,000 ($217).
In 2022 when the ARCON announced the mandatory pre-exposure approval, it said violators will be subjected to prosecution and sanctions.
