Hello

Victoria here,

Ebonyi state has just launched it’s government owned ride hailing platform called EBOCAB, which is now Nigeria’s second public sector ride hailing initiative.

With 90 vehicles, 60 pick-up trucks and 30 SUVs, this new urban transport platform aims to promote better urban transport system, curb street harassment and increase the streams of income for youths in the state.

Officially unveiled by the Governor, Francis Nwifuru, EBOCAB will start accepting bookings from it’s mobile app.

Besides the unattractive names, ride hailing platforms launched by governments generally don’t do well. Lagos’ LagRide for example, has always been in one scandal or the other.

Away from government run ride hailing platforms, here’s what I have for you today:

Africa’s untapped tech potential for the future

African kids
African kids

Children in Africa are not passive recipients of technology. In this digital era, young Africans are already laying the groundwork for Africa’s digital future.

As young as five, some are already learning to code, creating animations, and even building mobile apps. Africa is raising the next generation of tech experts, startup builders, and innovators.

According to Unicef, the youth population in Africa is set to reach 750 million by 2030, and if more than half of that number is equipped with relevant skills, then it is safe to say the continent will be a force to reckon with in coming years.

One notable shift is the educational sector. Traditional classrooms are now giving way to digital learning tools and hybrid methods. Schools have begun introducing STEM education into their curriculum.

Beyond that, startups like uLesson, eLimu, Ubongo and SONA are keeping these kids engaged with up to date digital skills and learning models.

The exposure to tech is strong, and parents also have a hand to play in it.

Dr Mories Atoki, Chief Executive Officer of the African Business Coalition for Health, stated at the Annual Youth Development Summit 2025 that the access to technology tools isn’t just about financial resources; it’s about being engaged and open to change and that the availability of online learning, both academic and vocational, is a game changer.

Odafe Mary, a school director also told Techpoint Africa that there is already a lot going on that children can leverage. ” Kids should have the consciousness that AI has come to stay, and if they want to build Africa’s digital future, then they have to tap into that. Of course, their parents have to be ready to back them on that”

So how are African kids building the digital future? how can parents get their kids into tech? What useful skills can they learn now? Find out in Delight’s latest for Techpoint Africa.

MTN South Africa announces 3G decommissioning

MTN South Africa has announced its intention to fully decommission the 3G layer of its network by 2027.

The company’s chief executive, Charles Molapisi, revealed this timeline at MTN’s Johannesburg headquarters on 29 May 2025.

According to Molapisi, the first steps are already underway, with MTN collapsing pockets of 3G where 4G coverage is strong enough to pick up the slack. This decision is not far-fetched.

Today, MTN operates more than 4,000 live 5G sites, covering roughly 44 percent of South Africa’s population. The operator aims to extend that reach to over 60 percent by the end of 2025.

Until then, and even beyond the 3G switch-off, MTN will continue to support 2G service to accommodate machine-to-machine devices such as smart meters, security alarms, and other Internet-of-Things applications that rely on low-bandwidth, always-on connectivity.

For South African consumers and businesses, the shift promises a sharper, more reliable mobile experience.

As MTN collapses its 3G layer, subscribers should expect smoother video calls, faster downloads, and more robust connectivity.

Global fintech company TerraPay has teamed up with Senegalese mobile money provider Wave Mobile Money to streamline how Malians receive money from abroad. The partnership enables direct deposits into mobile wallets, making international remittances more accessible and affordable for millions.

The collaboration leverages TerraPay’s vast global payment network to support remittance flows from money transfer operators across the United States, Canada, and Europe into Mali via one seamless integration. It also taps into the expertise of Orabank Mali in handling remittance services, adding local strength to the cross-border initiative.

With over 80% of Mali’s population using mobile phones, digital wallets have become central to financial access across the country. For many unbanked individuals, these platforms serve as a gateway to essential financial services. This partnership is expected to deepen financial inclusion by offering a faster, more reliable alternative to traditional remittance methods.
