Fintechs dominate the African tech ecosystem, 62% (~$2.9 billion) of total startup funding went to fintech in 2021 but does this mean we have too many of them?

In today’s edition of the Techpoint Africa Podcast, we decided to weigh in on the debate about Africa having too many fintech startups.

We spoke to experts and crunched the numbers, and while Chimgozirim drove a compelling argument, Nifemi still believed we have too many fintech focused on the same problems.

Still, on fintech, we talk about why buy now pay later (BNPL) services could be bad for young people. With the ability to own anything you want without paying for it immediately, the debt culture in Africa could be on the rise.

However, our fintech expert, Adedeji Olowe, has contrary opinions about BNPL services.

It was a fintech podcast as we closed the discussion with the new developments on eNaira. According to Technext, Nigeria’s central bank digital currency, eNaira is getting a new upgrade that could be a game-changer for it.

From paying bills to USSD enabled transactions, we discuss the upsides and downsides of the eNaira upgrade. You can catch all these insightful discussions on the Techpoint Africa Podcast available on all Podcast platforms, including SpotifyApple Podcasts, and Google Podcasts.
