MTN just gave its Nigeria CEO a $335K stock bonus

Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria, has been awarded $335,000 worth of shares as part of MTN Group’s performance-based compensation plan. The shares, which are 28,700 units, aren’t a cash payout; they’re tied to long-term targets.

This is part of a broader $9.5 million share allocation to top executives across the group, linked to metrics like shareholder returns, cash flow, and ESG goals.

A bonus, but also a bet: Toriola only fully benefits if MTN keeps performing over time. If targets aren’t met, the value drops. If they are, leadership wins alongside shareholders.

Why does this matter? Because Nigeria has become MTN’s biggest profit engine, making Toriola one of the most critical operators in the entire group.

Zoom out: African telcos are dealing with currency pressure, rising costs, and tighter margins. Instead of fixed pay, they’re tying compensation to performance to stay disciplined.

Bringing global work closer to home

For many African talents, the problem isn’t just finding jobs, it’s accessing them. On remote gigs and global marketplaces, the opportunities exist, but the systems to plug into them often don’t.

That’s the gap Chris Agholor is trying to close with Totlesoft.

Launched in 2024, Totlesoft is building an all-in-one platform for work, business, and research. Instead of jumping between freelance sites, affiliate platforms, and survey tools, users can do everything in one place. They can apply for jobs, earn from microtasks, promote products for commissions, and even participate in paid research.

The idea is simple: if access is the problem, then infrastructure is the solution.

Still early, the platform has crossed 2,000 users and generated just under $10,000 in revenue, mostly through a 5% commission on transactions.

Madica to invest $600,000 in three startups

Madica invests in startups
Madica invests in startups

Madica has backed three startups across Nigeria, Kenya, and Tanzania, committing up to $600,000 in total, which is $200,000 per startup.

The companies — Kilimo Fresh, Hakimu, and Biovana — span agritech, legal tech, and health data. A deliberate focus outside fintech, which is Africa’s most funded sector..

Since launching in 2022, Madica has focused on founders who typically get overlooked by venture capital, whether due to geography, sector, or weak investor networks.

Now it’s doubling down on that thesis: Backing underfunded sectors while giving founders an 18-month support system, which includes mentorship, investor access, and ecosystem exposure.

Alongside the investments, Madica released a 75-page fundraising guide for first-time founders, breaking down how to raise pre-seed capital in Africa—myths, trade-offs, and actual templates included.

Why does this matter? Because early-stage funding in Africa is still heavily concentrated in a few sectors and cities. Madica is trying to widen that pipe, both with capital and with information.
