  • Flutterwave has obtained a payment service provider licence in Cameroon.
  • The move expands its footprint to over 30 African countries.
  • It follows recent licences in Ghana, Zambia, and Uganda.
  • The licence enables digital payments for global and regional merchants in Cameroon.

Flutterwave has secured approval to operate as a licensed payment service provider in Cameroon, marking another step in its ambitious drive to build Africa’s most extensive digital payments network.

The Nigerian-founded fintech received the authorisation from Cameroon’s National Payment Systems Department, enabling it to offer its full range of digital payment solutions to businesses and individuals in Central Africa.

This development strengthens Flutterwave’s growing presence across Africa. Over the past year, the company has secured major regulatory milestones, including a Payment System licence from the Bank of Zambia, an Enhanced Payment Service Provider licence in Ghana, and a Payment Systems Operator licence from the Bank of Uganda.

The Cameroon licence also significantly strengthens Flutterwave’s presence in Francophone Africa, a market often underrepresented in fintech growth stories. It builds on the company’s earlier partnership with telecoms giant MTN, which allowed merchants in Cameroon to accept mobile money payments through MTN MoMo.

Olugbenga ‘GB’ Agboola, Founder and CEO of Flutterwave, stated that the new licence aligns with the company’s vision. According to him, Cameroon’s dynamic economy and growing digital adoption make it a strategic market for the company’s long-term growth.

“Cameroon holds a central place in the future of Africa’s digital economy, and we’re proud to play a part in unlocking its potential.”

Since its launch in 2016, Flutterwave has expanded operations to over 30 African countries, providing payment infrastructure for businesses of all sizes. The company’s platform powers payments for global merchants, including Uber, Microsoft, and Booking.com, while enabling small businesses to transact across borders.

The approval in Cameroon reflects Flutterwave’s broader regulatory strategy as it works to overcome past challenges in markets like Kenya, where authorities raised concerns over licensing and compliance. The company appears to be doubling down on securing country-specific approvals to build trust with regulators, businesses, and consumers.

With this new licence, Flutterwave is poised to deepen financial inclusion and facilitate seamless transactions for merchants and consumers in Cameroon. It also represents a critical step in its mission to unify Africa’s fragmented payments landscape.
