WiConnect, an Angolan startup driving digital inclusion across underserved regions, has raised $2.5 million in convertible note financing from private investors.

This landmark round is especially significant in a market that, according to recent data, attracted less than $1 million in total venture capital throughout 2024. With this raise, WiConnect not only strengthens its position as a national tech reference but also puts Angola firmly on the radar of international VCs.

Recognised by Seedstars as Angola’s most innovative company, WiConnect has steadily built trust with international investors and institutions. This recognition validates the company’s model and the transformative impact of its operations in Angola.

Founded in 2015 by two Angolan entrepreneurs, WiConnect operates at the intersection of connectivity, data and digital advertising. Its mission is to close the digital divide in Africa by deploying free public Wi-Fi hotspots in underserved areas, in partnership with banks, telecom operators, and government programmes such as AngolaOnline.

The business model is based on digital advertising and data analytics, providing sustainable, no-cost internet access to users. To date, the platform has delivered over three million Wi-Fi sessions and created more than 50 direct jobs.

According to the company, the newly raised capital will be used to scale its infrastructure with the goal of ensuring at least one free Wi-Fi access point in every Angolan municipality by 2027. Funds will also support cash flow, technology development, and alignment with Angola’s 2023–2027 Digital Inclusion Strategic Plan.

“African solutions, built by Africans, for Africans. We’re building today the continent we want to live in tomorrow.”
— said the CEO of WiConnect, underscoring the company’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable digital transformation.

WiConnect’s funding round reflects a broader trend emerging across Africa, where startups are raising capital to solve infrastructure challenges in scalable and innovative ways. While countries like Nigeria, Kenya and Egypt usually dominate venture attention, WiConnect’s success shows that Angola is ready to rise as a new innovation hub.

The company has also announced this round is only the beginning of its financial roadmap. A Series A is planned for late 2025, focused on national consolidation and operational capacity. By 2027, the company expects to launch a Series B, aimed at regional expansion and technological scaling.

As part of its long-term vision, WiConnect intends to become one of the first Angolan startups to list on BODIVA — Angola’s national stock and bond exchange — promoting transparency, institutional maturity, and access to new capital markets.

The impact of this investment goes beyond the company itself. It represents a pivotal moment for Angola’s innovation ecosystem, proving the viability of locally designed tech models and sending a clear signal to investors, regulators and institutional partners: Angola is open for capital, talent and growth.

A founding member of ASSED (Angola’s Startup Association), WiConnect has been instrumental in drafting the upcoming Startup Law in collaboration with the government. The round also received critical support from strategic partners such as 7Sábios (tax advisory), manuelemanuel (legal counsel), and PI Advisory (financial advisory) — demonstrating the growing maturity of the national ecosystem.

With this milestone, WiConnect reaffirms its role as a symbol of a new era for Angolan technology — one where connectivity, data intelligence, and digital inclusion go hand in hand.
