The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) announced on its Twitter handle that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Limited on the use of C-Band Spectrum for 5G services in Nigeria. NIGCOMSAT controls Nigeria’s Communication Satellite systems.
The C-Band Spectrum, a mid-range frequency set at 3.6 GHz-4.2 GHz, has been touted as the most suitable and appropriate frequency for deploying the 5G network services. Spectrum refers to the invisible radio frequencies that wireless signals travel over. According to the GSM Association (GSMA), most commercial 5G networks rely on spectrum in the 3.5 GHz range (3.5 GHz-4.2 GHz).
A 2014 Assessment of C-Band Usage in African Countries report published by Euroconsult shows that the C-Band Spectrum is widely used in Nigeria by government agencies, oil companies, banks, UN organisations in Nigeria, etc.
Recall that the NCC indicated in 2020 that it had started working on a policy for the deployment of 5G in Nigeria after MTN ran successful trials in three major Nigerian locations: Lagos, Abuja, and Calabar.
5G deployment in Nigeria has been shrouded in controversies, especially as regards health concerns. However, the NCC’s announcement hints at a steady move towards 5G deployment in Nigeria, sooner rather than later.
