  • The Lagos State Government has announced that the electronic call-up (e-call-up) system for the Lekki-Epe corridor will commence on September 23, 2024, following the postponement of its initial rollout, which was scheduled for August 1, 2024.
  • According to the Lagos State Government, the implementation of the e-call-up system to manage truck movements is aimed at preventing severe congestion caused by articulated trucks and improving the efficiency of logistics operations within the Lekki-Epe Free Trade Zone corridor.

The e-call-up system is a digital platform designed to regulate the entry and exit of trucks in the Lekki-Epe area by scheduling and coordinating their movements. It is expected to help prevent the chaotic traffic situations often caused by the indiscriminate parking and movement of trucks within the corridor.

Trucks entering the Lekki Free Trade Zone will first be directed to designated operational parks, where they will wait until they are called to proceed to the Lekki Free Trade Zone, port, or terminal when road conditions are convenient. These parks have a combined capacity to hold over 1,200 trucks, keeping them off the roads when not needed.

Articulated trucks operating in the corridor will be equipped with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags to streamline and automate the management and tracking of truck movements.

The e-call-up system will also introduce a ‘belt time,’ during which no trucks or lorries will be allowed on the road whether they are heading to the park or at the loading bay, specifically from 5 am to 9 am and 6 pm to 10 pm.

The Lagos Ministry of Transportation reiterated that the Lekki-Epe corridor is a key economic hub in Lagos, housing numerous industries, including the Lekki Free Trade Zone, the Dangote Refinery, and the Lekki Deep Sea Port.

“The efficient movement of goods and services in this area is crucial for the state's economy, making the e-call-up system an essential tool for sustainable development,” the Ministry stated.

In 2023, the Lagos State Government approved the deployment of the e-call-up system and announced its implementation in July 2024 as part of an effort to introduce a technology-driven solution for truck movement in the Lekki-Epe corridor.

Initially, the system was scheduled to launch on August 1, 2024, via the platform mycallup.com, however, this launch date was postponed to ensure full complaints and all necessary measures were in place for a smooth rollout.

Moreover, the new launch date comes as the Dangote Refinery began fuel distribution on September 15. Along with other industrial hubs in the vicinity, the system is essential for controlling gridlocks to maintain smooth economic activity in the region.
