The news:

  • Nokia announced in a press release published on Monday, July 15, 2024, that it has entered into a new partnership with Telecom Egypt, the government-owned telecom provider, to bring fifth-generation (5G) technology to Egypt for the first time to transform the country's telecom landscape by enhancing capacity and connectivity.
  • The collaboration will see 5G-ready services enter Egyptian cities, including Alexandria, Aswan, Cairo, Giza, and Luxor.
  • Under the partnership, Nokia will provide 5G radio access network (RAN) equipment from its extensive AirScale portfolio, comprising Massive MIMO radios, baseband, remote radio heads, and services. Nokia will deploy its equipment later in 2024.

These solutions, utilising Nokia's energy-efficient ReefShark System-on-Chip technology, are expected to deliver 5G capacity and coverage to Telecom Egypt’s customers.

Nokia assured that the new 5G technology will position the North African nation to enjoy numerous benefits, including better Internet connection, enhanced network performance, and improved capacity, especially in Egypt’s most densely populated areas.

Nokia assured that the advancement will give rise to unprecedented innovation and efficiency across various industries, enabling many organisations to thrive in today's fast-paced digital landscape.

Additionally, Nokia says it’ll offer various professional services spanning deployment to integration and network optimisation.

A few days before the licence approval, the telco announced its partnership with Zain Omantel International Company (ZOI), a telecom wholesale company, to develop new digital infrastructure and establish a data transfer route connecting Europe, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Arabian Gulf.

Telecom Egypt, which has been providing retail telecommunication services for over 50 years, reported a 48% net profit for the first nine months of 2023.
