Today on the Techpoint Africa Podcast, our hosts discuss the stories making the waves in the African tech space this week.
The major stories are:
- Alerzo lays off 100 workers, reportedly due to warehouse automation
- GetEquity COO reportedly detained by police over unpaid funds
- Zazuu shuts down
Starting off the discussion, is news of Okada Books' shut down and the Sam Altman-OpenAI drama. Okada Books shut down this week after opening its doors in 2013. The company has been a cornerstone of the Nigerian self-publishing scene and made it easier for budding authors to get into the writing industry.
In to the podcast proper, we discuss Alerzo. The startup is in the news once again for laying off 100 members of it staff stating that their roles have become redundant with the automation of the company's warehouses.
But, here's where it gets interesting. This is the third time the eCommerce startup is laying off in the last fifteen months. So, what do these automated warehouses look like? How do they work? Wouldn't you like to know?

Next we dive into the scuffle between GetEquity and Peppa. This week, news broke that the GetEquity's COO, Temitope Ekundayo had been detained by the Nigerian Police after a report was filed by Peppa.
Then there's Zazuu. Yet another fintech startup shutting down due to their inability to raise funds to ensure the company's continuity.
Seems like a lot right? But we're not done yet. Before saying our goodbyes, we spotlight other stories that made the headlines this week. Lke Patricia failing to settle its customers this week as promised and Binance and it's CEO, CZ, pleading guilty to several criminal charges. The crypto company was also fined $4.3bn.
Our hosts, Oluwanifemi Kolowale, Bolu Abiodun, and Chimgozirim Nwokoma, speak extensively on these stories while giving important — and sometimes silly — insights.
