The Federal Government of Nigeria barred several telco subscribers from making calls after they failed to link their National Identification Numbers (NIN) to their Subscriber Identification Module (SIM).

The prolonged deadline for the linkage came to an end on Monday, April 4, 2022, and caused disconnected subscribers to troop to the nearest National Identification Management Commission’s (NIMC) office to have their lines unbarred.

However, many have been unable to link their SIMs as NIMC seems to be unable to verify NINs. According to Premium Times, over 7.5 million MTN subscribers are yet to get their NINs verified by the NIMC.

This is where we began our discussion on today's edition of the Techpoint Africa Podcast.

Interestingly, we had more to say about telcos as they plan to increase calls, data, and SMS tariffs by 40%. According to Nairametrics, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has dismissed the request by telcos but Gbolahan Awonuga, Head of Operations for the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators in Nigeria had something slightly different to tell us on the podcast.

And from telcos to big tech companies, YouTube is shutting down YouTube Go, a stripped-down version of YouTube created for emerging markets which had features such as offline viewing and nearby sharing.

Chimgozirim reveals why YouTube is shutting its lightweight version and what plans it has for users in the emerging markets.

YouTube isn't the only video platform making changes, TikTok also wants to share ad revenues with creators. And finally Tesla CEO, Elon Musk reveals his plans for Twitter and they are very lofty.

If you're wondering where Africans fall into all of Musk's lofty plans, listen to interesting takes on the Techpoint Africa Podcast available on all Podcast platforms, including SpotifyApple Podcasts, and Google Podcasts.
