The Codeine Epidemic
This week, BBC Africa released a documentaty on the abuse of codeine by young Nigerians especially in the north. Watch the video below.
In Nigeria, an addictive drug is destroying young lives - codeine cough syrup, a medicine that's become a street drug.
But who makes this syrup? And who sells its to Nigeria’s students? #BBCAfricaEye and BBC Pidgin went undercover to find out pic.twitter.com/f1s5v0BRZs

Instead of banning codeine, Nigeria should ban the bad governance that makes young people so desperate that they have nothing to look forward to in life. We can’t keep insulting them for being uneducated when we don’t build schools or as lazy when we don’t provide jobs for them.
— Ben Murray-Bruce (@benmurraybruce) May 2, 2018
We will ban codeine. Good step. BUT it is a low hanging fruit. We need to address roots.
WHY are young boys and girls, single and married, all abusing drugs? WHAT are they escaping from? Someone who gets high on codeine will find something else to get high on. Address the WHY!!
