The suspension has left approximately 1.3 million beneficiaries in limbo. These individuals have not yet transitioned from the older gold cards to the new black cards, risking disruptions in accessing their social grants. SASSA has urged beneficiaries who are et to make the switch to Postbank black cards to open accounts with alternative banks of their choice to ensure there are no disruptions in receiving payments.
In response, the SARB has extended the validity of the gold cards until 31 May 2025, providing a temporary reprieve. However, this extension underscores deeper systemic issues. The transition to digital payment systems has been hampered by inadequate infrastructure, especially in rural areas with limited access to banking facilities and digital literacy.
For now, the extension of the gold cards provides a short-term fix, allowing beneficiaries to continue receiving their grants without disruption. But it doesn’t solve the underlying issues that caused the suspension in the first place.
