  • Capitec, a South African retail bank, has partnered with PayT in V broadcaster MultiChoice to provide discounted DStv Stream plans to customers.
  • This comes after Capitec Bank and MultiChoice partnered in August 2024 to offer discounted rates for the streaming service Showmax to the bank’s customers.
  • Capitec CEO Gerrie Fourie stated that Capitec’s new DStv Stream vouchers would allow customers to purchase access to specific programmes or channels.

However, this is not a pay-per-view model, as MultiChoice told MyBroadband, stating, “We’re pleased to announce that from next month, Capitec clients will also benefit from discounted access to DStv Stream plans, giving them more ways to enjoy premium entertainment at a reduced cost.”

This is a move aimed at making quality content more accessible and affordable for all PayTV customers, the broadcaster added.

While this offer has been made public, the prices for the discounted DStv Stream vouchers have yet to be announced. MultiChoice South Africa and Showmax CEO Marc Jury have said that further details surrounding the offers will be made public soon.

At the time of the August Showmax discount, Showmax Entertainment was R49 per month via the Capitec app, down from R99. Showmax Entertainment Mobile was available for R22 per month and Showmax Premier League for R34 per month through the bank’s app, rather than R45 and R69, respectively. Moreover, vouchers purchased using the Capitec app are redeemable by anyone.

This move could address the PayTV subscriber decline and revenue losses reported in its financial report for the fiscal year ending March 2024. Besides, MultiChoice Group CEO Calvo Mawela claimed that Showmax is on track to generate $1 billion in revenue within five years and has plans to cut cost.

At the time of the August announcement, the report highlighted that Capitec serves up to 12 million active banking app users, who can purchase Showmax streaming vouchers.  Capitec has also just announced that its half-year headline earnings have soared by 36% to R6.4 billion.

The discount initiative allows more people access to MultiChoice products as the pay-TV is cracking down and pushing for legal reforms to combat illegal streaming websites in South Africa.

While MultiChoice South Africa offers discounts on DStv and Showmax to users through the Capitec bank app, MultiChoice Kenya and MultiChoice Nigeria are increasing DStv subscription prices.
