Creators in Malawi to start earning online in April

Malawi’s creators might finally be getting their moment. After years of producing content without getting paid by global platforms, things are starting to shift, and this time, it looks more structured than just promises.
Here’s the news: the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority is working on a monetisation push in partnership with Meta and TikTok. The first engagement is set for April in Lilongwe, where selected creators will begin conversations around how to actually earn from their content.
What this means is that Malawi is trying to plug its creators into the global creator economy, something many African countries like Nigeria and Kenya already benefit from. For a long time, Malawian creators have been locked out of monetisation tools on platforms like Facebook and YouTube, despite building audiences and driving engagement.
Why it matters is simple: money, jobs, and relevance. The government believes enabling monetisation could unlock new income streams, create jobs for young people, and even bring in tax revenue through the digital economy. In a country where youth unemployment is a real issue, turning content creation into a viable career could be a big deal.
The context here is years of frustration. Creators have repeatedly pushed for access to monetisation features, arguing that they generate value for global platforms but earn nothing in return. Some estimates even suggest creators could be making hundreds of dollars monthly if these systems were enabled locally.
Zoom out, and this is part of a bigger African story. The creator economy on the continent is growing fast, but access to monetisation remains uneven. Malawi’s move signals a more intentional approach, one where governments, platforms, and creators are finally sitting at the same table to figure out how Africans can actually get paid for their digital work.

How this Nigerian created an AI tool used by developers at a16z
A Nigerian developer is quietly building one of the tools reshaping how websites are designed, and it started with a simple frustration.
Sampson Ovuoba didn’t like that creating something visual required writing so much code. So in 2021, he built Windframe, a tool that lets developers design interfaces visually and export clean code.
At first, it was just a template-based product. Then AI happened.
Today, Windframe can turn simple text prompts into full UI layouts, helping developers go from idea to interface in minutes. That shift is paying off. The product now has 16,000 users, including developers at firms like Andreessen Horowitz.
Even without disclosed revenue, the numbers tell a story. With typical SaaS conversion rates, Windframe could already be generating tens of thousands of dollars monthly, all while being run by a team of just three people.
And Ovuoba isn’t chasing venture capital (at least not yet). After seeing a heavily funded startup lay off staff, he is choosing a slower, more sustainable path.
Now, he is betting on the next phase: Brandframe, a tool that can study a company’s website and generate on-brand designs automatically.

Moniepoint acquires Orda to deepen restaurant play

Moniepoint has acquired the Nigerian operations of Orda in a deal that signals its growing ambition beyond payments. The startup, founded in 2020 by Guy Futi and co-founders, built tools that help restaurants manage everything from orders and inventory to payments and analytics.
Here’s what changes: Orda’s products will now be folded into Moniepoint’s business suite and rebranded as Moniebook for Restaurants. The idea is simple: instead of juggling multiple tools, restaurant owners can run their operations and payments in one place. About 25 Orda team members are also making the move, while the company’s Kenyan arm will continue operating independently.
For Moniepoint, this isn’t really about entering a new market; it’s about going deeper into one it already dominates. Restaurants already account for a significant chunk of transactions on its network, with Nigerians reportedly spending over ₦8 billion daily through its terminals. By embedding software into that flow, Moniepoint is turning from just a payments provider into a full operating system for businesses.
Why this matters is in the everyday reality of how many restaurants run. Orders are often tracked in one system and payments in another, and reconciling both can be messy. Bringing everything together reduces errors, saves time, and gives business owners better visibility into how they’re actually performing.
There’s also a bigger play here. With access to richer business data, from sales trends to inventory cycles, Moniepoint can expand its financial services, like offering working capital to restaurant owners. And with competitors like Chowdeck already making moves in this space, the battle to own restaurant tech in Nigeria is just getting started.
