Every minute, a preventable tragedy unfolds in Nigeria: 54 women lose their lives daily due to complications from unsafe abortions. While post-abortion care is a legal and vital service, many women face significant barriers to accessing it. Stigma, time spent searching for a facility that offers post abortion care, long travel distances, and a fear of judgment from healthcare providers often prevent them from seeking the help they desperately need.
Komfot Health, a health-tech startup in Nigeria, is tackling this crisis head on. Since February 2024, their pilot programme has successfully connected over 1,000 women with trained, unbiased healthcare providers, ensuring they receive the compassionate care they deserve.
Now, with a grant from the Hanga SRH program, Komfot Health is taking a crucial step forward by automating its service. They are developing a dedicated WhatsApp bot to streamline access to care and save even more lives.
This innovative bot will serve as a secure and confidential first point of contact. Users can initiate a conversation to find out if they qualify for post-abortion care. If they do, the bot will seamlessly connect them with a verified healthcare provider nearest to their location. This technology is designed to overcome the common hurdles of stigma and distance, offering a lifeline in moments of urgency.
In a country where social stigma can lead to preventable deaths, Komfot Health’s mission is clear: to ensure that every woman can access prompt, dignified, and quality care without fear or judgment. By utilizing the power of technology, they are transforming the landscape of reproductive health in Nigeria, one message at a time.
