In just seven days, over 20,000 women from Nigeria, Ghana, and East Africa applied for the Axia Women in Tech Scholarship, marking a record breaking response before the application window officially closed. This overwhelming turnout underscores the high demand for digital skills and the growing urgency to bridge the gender gap in Africa ’ s technology sector.
Notably, over 1,000 applications came from outside Nigeria, reflecting the regional and international appeal of this initiative.
Axia Africa, a leading EdTech organization dedicated to empowering Africans through technology education, launched this initiative to equip women with industry-relevant skills in Data Science, Cybersecurity, Product Management, Backend Development, Frontend Development, and Product Design. Beyond technical training, the program also offers expert mentorship, career guidance, and hands-on projects, ensuring participants are well-prepared for high-demand roles in the global tech ecosystem.
The surge in applications highlights the eagerness of African women to embrace opportunities in the digital space. Speaking on the massive response, the founder of Axia Africa stated, “These numbers validate our belief that African women are more than ready to lead in tech. Despite Africa ’ s rapid technological advancements, women continue to be underrepresented, holding less than 30% of tech roles across the continent.
