NerdzFactory Company and the Raspberry Pi Foundation have launched Experience AI in Nigeria, a major initiative funded by Google.org to advance artificial intelligence (AI) education. Designed to build foundational AI skills, the programme will train 3,150 secondary school teachers across Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, and Ekiti states. This will enable them to bring AI literacy to over 157,000 students and prepare young Nigerians for an AI-driven future.

The programme launches as Nigeria aims to capitalize on the economic potential of AI. A report from Public First suggests AI could add as much as US $15 billion to the nation’s economy by 2030. This growth depends on developing local talent skilled in creating and deploying AI technologies responsibly.

Experience AI directly supports Nigeria’s National AI Strategy and the ₦2.8 billion commitment announced by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy in 2024. The initiative translates national policy into practical classroom outcomes, reinforcing the country’s goal to become an AI leader in Africa.

The globally recognised Experience AI curriculum was co-developed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation, a UK charity focused on computing education, and Google DeepMind, a unit within Google focused on building AI responsibly to benefit humanity. The program provides teachers with free, comprehensive resources, including ready-to-use lesson plans, engaging classroom activities, and interactive materials to clearly introduce core AI and machine learning concepts. Since its launch in April 2023, the programme has reached an estimated 1.5 million students across the world.

As a key implementation partner in Nigeria, NerdzFactory will lead teacher training and coordinate with schools and educational stakeholders. The programme will run through December 2026, aligning with Nigeria’s academic calendar. To ensure broad access, NerdzFactory will collaborate with state education ministries to reach public schools, with a focus on rural, low-income, and underserved communities.

The training uses a blended model. Approximately 70% is delivered online through live sessions and digital materials, while 30% consists of in-person workshops to ensure hands-on engagement, especially in areas with limited connectivity. Continuous support will be provided to teachers throughout the programme.

Ade Olowojoba, Founding Partner of NerdzFactory Company, said: “At NerdzFactory, we believe that access to AI education should not be a privilege; it should be a right. This partnership with the Raspberry Pi Foundation aligns perfectly with our mission to democratise access to digital skills and open up new opportunities for young people in Nigeria. Through Experience AI, we are not just teaching technology; we are empowering a generation to innovate, solve problems, and drive positive change in their communities.”

Philip Colligan CBE, CEO of the Raspberry Pi Foundation, added: “We are delighted to welcome NerdzFactory Company as one of the Experience AI global network of partners we are working with in Nigeria. Working together, we look forward to equipping teachers with the skills needed to teach AI confidently, ensuring it’s both engaging and relevant for their students. Through the partnership, we aim to ensure that young people in Nigeria develop a foundational understanding of AI technologies and the role that they can play in their lives.”

Anna Koivuniemi, Head of Google DeepMind Impact Accelerator, also commented: “We are thrilled to see the launch of Experience AI in Nigeria. As AI continues to reshape our world, it’s crucial that every young Nigerian has the chance to learn more about and engage with this transformative technology. By making AI education more accessible, we can empower young people to make more informed decisions about using AI applications in their daily lives, and encourage safe and responsible use of the technology.”

By turning national strategy into tangible educational opportunities, Experience AI is preparing Nigeria’s youth to harness AI’s transformative power. The initiative aims to foster a new generation of innovators, driving both social and economic growth across the nation.
