Citidata brings cloud closer to Nigerian SMEs

With a booming economy and a rapidly expanding digital landscape, Nigeria’s data centre industry has demonstrated remarkable growth and development, with key players leveraging their resources, driving innovations, and adapting to trends.

What’s new? Citidata, a new provider of data management and cloud-based services, has officially launched in Nigeria, with its headquarters in Ogun State.

Partnering with Petrol Data and Top Tech Engineering, the data centre aims to boost digital transformation across Africa, prioritising small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Why does it matter? While major players in the data centre industry tend to exclude small businesses, Citidata hopes to cater to all types of businesses with its strategic locations and local alternative prices across the country, making it reliable, fast, and affordable.

A significant amount of data aggregation is ongoing, and the cost of technology has become nearly unreachable for startups. Citidata aims to provide quality, globally recognised standards and services that meet the needs and budgets of its customers.

Not just focused on technology, the goal is to bring edge data centres closer to users, especially those far from the major data hubs in Lagos.

Developer's discovery: Chaos creates focus

Work Life Episode 14

Here’s a quick question: How do people stay focused on more than one job? Not everyone can multitask. I can only focus on one thing at a time; having too much to do at once stresses me out. Many people even experience anxiety from this.

However, for Mayowa, it’s different. He claims that working on multiple jobs has helped him focus more. What? I’m as perplexed as you are.

Only 2.5% of people can truly multitask, as cognitive efficiency decreases with the more tasks you take on. Unexpectedly, Oluwanifemi has just discovered a prodigy!

Despite having only three years of experience as a developer, he’s managed to organise his tasks in a way that works for him. Focused on completing those tasks, he doesn’t interact much with his colleagues until after work.

One thing you can deduce about him is his utmost commitment and love for his work. Yet even with that kind of work ethic, he says coding isn’t all he wants to do. Mayowa enjoys solving problems, so he’s planning to start a business.

With his unique experience as a developer, Mayowa shares three surprising lessons he has learned about work.

Oluwanifemi’s story uncovers the life of a Nigerian developer — his journey through workplace PTSD, losing a promising foreign gig after the interviewers discovered his nationality, work-life balance, and his desire to solve problems.

Itana develops Africa’s first digital free zone

The African Finance Corporation (AFC) has partnered with Nigeria’s digital management company, Itana, to develop the first digital economic zone in Africa.

Phase one, valued at $100 million and already in progress with PwC Nigeria, Future Africa, and Charter Cities Institute, will advocate for the Promotion of Digital Free Zones in Nigeria (DIFZIN).

With more than 2,000 digital members ready to collaborate, this phase will include the construction of a tech campus in Nigeria designed to host over 5,000 students.

Why should you care? This initiative aims to create a thriving hub for Africa’s digital economy, reinforcing the corporation’s commitment to driving innovation, job creation, and sustainable economic development across the continent.

Since its launch, Itana has secured $2 million in investments, launched its one-stop-shop app for company registration and business banking, and aims to enable visa processing and tax filing services.

What’s more, businesses that register as free zone enterprises with Itana will be exempt from major tax requirements like corporate income tax and value-added tax, as well as import duties on physical products.
