The African tech space keeps buzzing every week.

On today's episode of the Techpoint Africa Podcast, our host, Oluwanifemi Kolawole is joined by Mojola Ola (CEO, Grid Crux Energy Solutions) and Emmanuel Paul to discuss the latest trends and developments in African tech. They delve into significant tech stories and provide insightful analysis of prominent tech narratives from the week.

The conversation begins with the recent authorisation granted to MTN Nigeria by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to produce 15.94 megawatts (MW) of electricity across four captive power plants in Lagos State.

Furthermore, other companies, including Havenhill Synergy, Golden Penny Power Limited, and several others, have also received permits for similar projects to enhance off-grid power generation in various states.

The issuance of these licences is in accordance with section 165(1)(m) of the Electricity Act 2023, which grants NERC the authority to issue licences for mini-grid concessions to renewable energy companies to exclusively provide power to specific areas with obligations to serve local customers.

It is on record that for the first time since 2016, the MTN group has recorded a significant financial downturn. Could this be a pointer to something?

They also discussed the news about Elon Musk's Starlink establishing ground stations in Lagos, Ogun, and Rivers State to improve connectivity in Nigeria.

Starlink made its entry into Nigeria in 2022 after acquiring an Internet Service Provider (ISP) licence from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), as well as Sales and Installation and International Gateway licences. The International Gateway licence enables Starlink to set up and operate facilities for the transmission of international voice, data, and other telecommunication services in and out of Nigeria.

The project to establish ground stations is being carried out in partnership with Equinix, a prominent player in data centre solutions. This move is expected to place SpaceX as a major player in the Nigerian telecom sector.
