Financial technology aka ‘fintech’ has become more than a buzzword today. It has shaped how we transact online and offline, resulting in its meteoric rise in Nigeria and across the continent.
In the past few years, the industry has seen a massive influx of funding. Between 2018 and 2021, Nigerian fintech startups raised over $1 billion, according to the Nigerian Startup Funding Report.
A more recent report showed that African startups providing financial services received over $107 million out of $174.77 million raised in July 2022.
These feats might provide an explanation for the increasing number of fintech startups in Nigeria. At least 270 are reported to be actively running, prompting the question, “are there too many fintech companies with similar products in Nigeria?”
Today, embedded finance offerings like Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) and lending are becoming popular among non-fintech startups. This raises another question: “can every startup be a fintech startup?”
Interestingly, the Nigerian senate just passed the Nigerian Startup Bill (NSB) meant to create an enabling environment for startups to thrive in the country. What impact will this have on the fintech sector?
