- Liquid Intelligent Technologies, a tech company, partnered with American connectivity innovator Globalstar to provide advanced 5G connectivity solutions across Africa, the Middle East, and the Gulf.
- This partnership also includes potential expansion to Globalstar’s satellite, Band n53 spectrum and IoT solutions on a non-exclusive basis.
- Liquid Intelligent Technologies will have exclusive rights to sell and distribute Globalstar’s XCOM RAN private network 5G solution in Africa and other regions.
The 5G XCOM RAN solution promises four times the capacity of traditional 5G, boosting advanced wireless tech deployment in Africa and supporting AI applications. It's set to transform the mining industry in Africa and high-end markets in the Middle East and Gulf regions.
Strive Masiyiwa, Founder and Chairman of Liquid Intelligent Technologies, said, “With this technology, we can now offer large businesses, like mines, their own 5G private networks that also support NextGen services like AI. This is huge.”
Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, CEO of Globalstar, highlighted that Liquid’s leadership in expanding markets is crucial for their technologies, which enable safe automation and remote control of mobile equipment in high-value environments.
As Liquid is leveraging some of Globalstar's infrastructure, including satellite, Band n53 spectrum, and IoT solutions, this partnership can impact 5G adoption and digital transformation in Africa since adoption has been slow due to various challenges, including infrastructural gaps.
Sub-Saharan Africa is projected to have 226 million 5G mobile network subscriptions by 2030, reflecting a 17% adoption rate. In the period to 2030, 5G is expected to contribute around $26 billion to Africa’s economy.
The technology is expected to transform the mining industry, potentially driving further digital shifts in the sector. AI could enhance mineral exploration, site selection, sorting, transportation, operations, value chain management, and safety.
As part of its digital transformation efforts in Africa, in May 2024, Liquid announced a distribution partnership agreement with Eutelsat Group, a satellite operator, to provide enterprise-grade low-earth orbit (LEO) services on the continent.
The technology company has also announced Uganda's first Microsoft Azure Stack, providing local businesses with cloud solutions that comply with local data regulatory requirements.
