- Paystack has introduced the “Pay With Apple Pay” payment option in Cote D’Ivoire and South Africa, allowing users to make payments in iOS apps and on the web via Safari.
- This news comes two years after making it available in Nigeria and about a year after launching it in Ghana.
- With this development, merchants in five African countries (Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Cote d'Ivoire, and Kenya) can now accept payments from users in the US, UK, Canada, and some other African countries that support Apple Pay.
The merchant must enable international payments even though the payment channel accepts GHS, NGN, KES, ZAR, and USD* currencies. A notice on its website states that only retailers in Nigeria and Kenya can use USD.
Users who have previously added a card and created an Apple Pay account should be able to see this option, according to the fintech. Only cardholders at participating banks in supported countries can reportedly access it.
This means that users who have enabled Apple Pay on their Apple devices and are paying with a card issued outside of the country will see the option to checkout using Apple Pay and complete the transaction with Touch ID or Face ID.
Apple Pay, a mobile payment and digital wallet service developed by Apple, allows customers to authorise transactions with Touch ID or Face ID instead of manually filling out long payment forms.
The digital mobile payment platform made its first African appearance in March 2021, following its launch in South Africa.
Shola Akinlade and Ezra Olubi founded Paystack in 2015, and Stripe acquired it in 2020. The Nigerian fintech enables businesses to accept payments via local and global channels.
Since its launch in Nigeria, it has expanded its operations into six other African countries: Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Côte d'Ivoire, Egypt, and Rwanda. In November 2023, the company obtained licences to operate in Egypt and Rwanda while partnering with financial institutions to provide financial services in Côte d'Ivoire.
Pay with Apple Pay was launched in Nigeria, making it the first payment gateway in the nation to support the payment service. This gives Nigerian businesses access to millions of Apple Pay users across the more than 60 countries where it is currently in use.
