Ninety-five startups from 15 African countries have participated in Y Combinator’s (YCs) accelerator programme since the first African startup was accepted into its Winter 2009 cohort.
The California-based startup accelerator founded in 2005 has become a prominent force in the global startup ecosystem. It won’t be an overstatement to consider it the mecca for African startups.
Riding on Techpoint Africa’s Senior Reporter, Emmanuel Paul’s examination of YC’s impact in the African startup space, Intelligence by Techpoint seized the opportunity to produce a report about YC in Africa over the years.
Intelligence by Techpoint, the data and research arm of Techpoint Africa, partnered with YC to give an account of YC’s activities in Africa since 2009. This collaboration has produced Y Combinator in Africa: A report about African startups that have gone through Y Combinator’s Accelerator Programme.
The report examines the distribution of YC-backed African startups using various criteria. Below are some of the highlights of the report:
- The breakdown of the $1.3 billion raised by YC-backed African startups
- 51 YC-backed African startups are from Nigeria
- A large percentage of YC-backed African startups were accepted into the accelerator programme in the first two years of their establishment
- Details of featured startups, among others
