There is likely a bug on Instagram that is causing users to lose followers, some in the millions. No definite cause or official reason has been given for the massive drop in follower count, but Instagram says it is looking into the matter.

According to a message from its official Twitter handle;

"We’re aware of an issue that is causing a change in account follower numbers for some people right now. We’re working to resolve this as quickly as possible."

In November 2018, Instagram announced it was doing a sweep to remove "inauthentic likes, follows and comments from accounts that use third-party apps to boost their popularity".

At the time, the social media platform said it was doing this to "continue to provide real experiences and genuine interactions".

But if its tweet and official statement is anything to go by, this is not what is happening at the moment.

According to a report in the Verge, popular celebrities including pop stars Selena Gomez and Arianna Grande saw a drop in follower count ranging in millions.
