Tanzania and Kenya are working towards a joint power project. The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) with Kenya’s Electricity Transmission Company (Ketraco) are on board.
The project tagged ‘Kenya-Tanzania Power Interconnection Project’ and funded by a $258.82 million loan from the African Development Bank and the Japanese International Co-operation Agency has kicked into full gear.
According to The East African, the project which is slated for a 2020 completion date has been divided and contractors from both sides are working.
Kenya will also extend its transmission line to Ethiopia, while Tanzania will extend its line to Zambia.
The essence of the project is to enable easy sharing of electricity between the two East African countries and also cut down costs of operating energy production. It will also ‘high-cost thermal energy with cheaper hydropower, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions.’
