Road transport, no doubt, is the most commonly used means of transportation in Nigeria, especially for inter and intra-state movement.

According to the Nigerian Gross Domestic Product report for Q1 2018 (PDF), transportation is one of the drivers of growth in the non-oil sector of the economy. And the road transport sub-sector grew by 16.63% in Q1.

Like almost every other form of transportation, the Internet is revolutionising access to road transport service, not only for intra-state but inter-state as well.

Inter-state transport providers

Companies in this category allow you not only to book bus tickets but reserve a specific seat as well. So if you are planning a trip from one state to the other in the country, you surely don’t have to visit every terminal in the city, just check any of the providers below.

You can also book at the terminals of the companies. And the baggage allowance for every of the transport service is a medium sized luggage.

GIGM

GIGM provides pick up service which allows passengers to board the bus at a designated location other than the company’s bus terminals and at no extra cost. There’s no refund policy but a ticket is valid for a thirty-day period from the date of purchase.

GUO Transport only allows customers to change ticket date once, subsequent changes attract a fee of ₦2,000. And customers that have travelled 10 round trips are eligible for a discount. Same day booking also attracts an extra charge of ₦1,000.

Changing ticket date on Chisco has to be done within 24 hours before the travel date. Loyal customers get rewards in form of discounts through the company’s loyalty scheme, the Ride and Rewards Loyalty Club. You need to get some points through riding with Chisco in order to qualify for to be a member of the club.

Although it has a limited number of routes, Autostar has class, as minivans and sedans are part of the company’s fleet. Autostar offers a ₦500 discount per seat for online ticket booking and there’s a grace period of 3 hours to reserve a seat without payment.

Third-party booking platforms

The third-party booking platforms are the platforms from which you can book a bus ticket from any bus operator while also comparing price and rating across various transport companies. These platforms are providing a one-stop shop for inter-state transport service.

eMyTrip

Travellers booking for bus tickets on eMyTrip can specify a preferred transport company to use. You can compare price and ratings of the available transport company. And like the in-house platform of the likes of GIGM, you can also choose your seat. You can also rate the service after a trip using the rating form on the website.

Oya

Oya.com.ng was acquired by Wakanow in 2015. Oya.com.ng allows NYSC members to book a bus directly to their camp in their place of primary assignment. You can also send cargo through the platform.

Bus.com.ng

With Bus.com.ng, you can search for a bus ride according to your preferred bus terminal of department and arrival. Aside online payment, you can also pay for a bus ticket at Bus.com.ng outlets and there’s also a travel point for every booked ticket.

Makeigo.com

Channels from which you can book for a bus ticket on Makeigo.com include the website, at their offices or via the telephone. USSD is one of the payment channels accepted on the platform. Makeigo.com informs your next of kin 20 minutes before you get to your destination, and you can choose to opt out of the notification service.
