11 startups selected for the National AI Research Grant Scheme

  • Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy, has announced the list of 45 recipients of the National AI Research Grant Scheme (NAIRS). 
  • The awardees, which include individuals and organisations at the forefront of AI research and application in Nigeria, will receive up to ₦5,000,000 each. 
  • The Minister said that 25 eminent AI specialists globally conducted a thorough evaluation before choosing the recipients. The application period ran from October 13, 2023, to November 15, 2023. 

Speaking about the recipients on X, Tijani said the proposals of the 45 recipients tackled some of the country’s most pressing challenges. He expressed confidence in the potential of awardees to revolutionise industries, empower their communities, unlock innovation, and ultimately propel Nigeria’s tech ecosystem onto the global stage. 

Of the 45 beneficiaries, 11 startups were selected to receive funding through the National AI Research Grant Scheme.

The 11 startups selected for the National AI Research Grant Scheme

Spanning health, agriculture, education, finance, governance, utility, and environmental sustainability sectors, the startups among the recipients are as follows:

  1. Aurelius is an AI startup with a healthcare system for automated contouring in radiation therapy planning.
  2. Cardio Intel is an AI-enabled healthcare mobile app for personalised monitoring and early detection of cardiovascular diseases.
  3. Nurse Oge is an AI-powered healthcare model for patient monitoring, diagnosis, and treatment.
  4. Tamela is the development and training of AI models for ultrasound imaging in pregnancy.
  5. Quantum Innovative Tech Solutions Ltd is an AI-powered personal health management system for real-time insights and anomaly detection.
  6. Life-Elixir Computers is a region-specific AI algorithm for cancer diagnosis in medical image analysis.
  7. Farmspeak Technology Limited is an AI platform for real-time insights to reduce poultry mortality rates and enhance climate resilience.
  8. Gwin Technologies Limited is a smart mobile diagnostic tool using AI for animal health. 
  9. Edunetix is an AI technology for personalised education and career advice.
  10. Lendsqr applies AI and alternative data sources for quick and bias-free credit decisions.
  11. IDB Analytics is an AI and geofencing technology to address security challenges in regions affected by conflicts.

This financial support for researchers and startups to accelerate their research and development efforts is consistent with NAIRS’ goal to foster a vibrant and sustainable AI ecosystem in Nigeria.
