  • Google is introducing generative AI features and capabilities across its Workspace apps, including Google Docs, Gmail, Sheets, and Slides.
  • Users can create text in Gmail and Docs using Google's in-house developed generative AI technology.
  • They can also type in a subject they want to write about, such as an employee email or a personal note in Gmail and Google Docs. Its AI will immediately generate a draft that they can edit to make it more unique and personalised.

According to Google, generative AI will draft, reply, summarise, and prioritise your Gmail, brainstorm, proofread, write, and rewrite in Docs, and create auto-generate images, audio, and video in Slides.

For context, users can use the "Help me write" feature to create draft documents or emails that look like job postings or birthday invitations.

By selecting the "Formalise" option, they can improve their writing by combining the "Rewrite" feature with structured data, such as a meeting-related discussion summary.

The options "Elaborate," "Shorten," and "Bulletise" allow the generative AI to add more detail to the information, condense it, and list the text's key points, respectively.

For users who want to change a document’s tone, the "I'm feeling lucky" option is available.

Besides, the generative AI will use auto-completion, formula generation, and contextual categorisation to transform raw data into insights and analysis in Sheets.

It will also create new backgrounds to capture notes in Meet and enable workflows in Chat.

The tech giant underscores that users will maintain control over the content by allowing them to accept or edit the changes made by the AI to the original text.

Meanwhile, Google is making it easier for developers to use generative AI to create their models and applications via Google's AI models, including PaLM, on Google Cloud.

Further, generative AI is becoming more supportive of vertex AI, a machine learning (ML) platform that lets you train and deploy ML models and AI applications.

Developers and companies use the platform to create and deploy machine learning models and AI applications. It will offer the building blocks for producing text, images, audio, and video.

Google is also launching a Generative AI App Builder, allowing businesses and governments to create AI-powered chat interfaces and virtual assistants.

The company will make these features accessible to US testers before releasing them to the general public.

This news shows Google's attempt to overtake rivals in the new AI race. Since ChatGPT debuted last year and Microsoft released Bing with chatbot support in February, the search giant has been rushing to introduce comparable AI features.

In February 2023, it introduced a conversational AI model, Bard, a direct response to Open AI’s Internet sensation, ChatGPT.

However, a few days later, Alphabet, Google's parent company, lost $100 billion in market value after Bard, its new chatbot, provided incorrect information in a promotional video.
