  • South African startup, Sendmarc, has secured $7 million in Series A funding to expand its sales team across Africa, the United States, Europe, and Latin America.
  • Atlantica Ventures led the round, with participation from Allan Gray, E-Squared Ventures, Fireball Capital, Endeavor Catalyst, 4Di Capital, Endeavor Harvest, Alpha Private Capital, and Kalon Venture Partners.
  • The company wants its commitment to email and domain security to play a critical role in protecting companies and users across these markets from the harmful effects of email impersonation.

In 2020, Sam Hutchinson (CEO), Keith Thompson, and Sacha Matulovich (CSO) launched Sendmarc to resolve email impersonation issues for their former clients and make the internet safer for their new customers.

Sendmarc helps its customers solve this problem by locking down their email domains and monitoring for attempted abuse.

Matulovich stated that the company base its technology on email authentication methods, including Sender Policy Framework (SPF) and Domain-based Message Authentication, global email security standards used by tech giants, including Google and Microsoft, to protect domains from spoofing.

Sendmarc claims its subscribers have access to the same tools that implement, monitor and maintain global email and domain security practices.

Per Matulovich, the world's largest technology companies are developing a global standard, and every domain owner is expected to implement it. However, he states that it's difficult to do so.

“It’s not something you can switch on in your Microsoft or Google. So we’ve built software enabling businesses to access these protocols to stop their emails from being impersonated,” he says.

SendMarc currently has over 1,000 paying customers, including South African stock exchanges, law firms like Bowmans, insurance companies, technology startups, banks, and law enforcement agencies from North America, Europe, Australia, South Africa, and Latin America.

Besides, 80% of its customers live in South Africa, with the rest scattered around the world, according to Matulovich.

What's more, the South African-based company also has offices in the Netherlands, Argentina, and Canada.
