MAFAB Communications officially launched its 5G services in Lagos on Thursday, January 26, 2023. The telecommunications company is one of the three operators licensed by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to deliver 5G broadband
services in Nigeria.

The launch, which started initially in Abuja, was met with fanfare, with the event witnessing the unveiling of MAFAB Communications' 5G logo.

Present at the event were Nasiru Ado Bayero, Emir of Bichi, Kano State; the board members of Jaiz Bank; Adeleke Adewolu, who represented the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NCC, Professor Umar Danbatta; Ikechukwu Nnamani, President, Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), among other dignitaries.

In his welcome address, Dr Mushabu Bashir, Chairman of MAFAB Communications, said, "Lagos is not just the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria, but also the prime destination for tourism, sports, entertainment, etc., and the future is now brighter due to 5G technology."

Bashir said their plans are quite ambitious as they aim to enable Nigeria to become a global technology hub in Africa and the world.

He said 5G technology would enable various business outfits to expand their frontiers with ease and speed, and it will also positively enable science, technology, and smart cities, among others.

He said, "It's not strange that the countries that are able to provide their citizens with the latest network infrastructure, which the 5G technology represents, are also the ones that thrive in the coming years." He added that with 5G infrastructure, our future as a people and as a country is preserved.

Bashir reserved special thanks for the president of Nigeria and the governor of Lagos State for creating the right conditions for technology to thrive.

Fahm said the launch would bring them closer to realising their dream of building a smart city in Lagos. He commended the leadership of MAFAB Communications for their commitment to making the 5G technology dream a reality.

He said, "It is a fact that the contribution of the telecommunications industry has been a significant economic driver for Lagos State in particular and Nigeria as a whole, contributing more than $70 billion and helping to create more than half a million jobs. The prospect of what we can achieve with 5G technology fills me with high hopes for the future of our economy, especially in terms of security."

He added that he is optimistic that they will achieve resounding success as the technology has met their preparedness, citing the popular Yaba District of Lagos, also known as the technological hub of Nigeria, which according to him, when completed, will be our own African Silicon Valley.

Speaking on how MAFAB Communications intends to penetrate the Nigerian market, Bayo Onigbanjo, Spokesperson for MAFAB Communications, said that their technology is suited for what they want to do. He says Nigeria still needs significant data, and we have yet to scratch the surface.

He said, "Our quality of service and the partners that we are bringing into the market will allow people to see that we are offering an alternative, and that's what we are asking people to do; that is, consider an alternative."

He added that they are looking forward to partnering with everybody, as they are focused on delivering quality service. He said, "Networks are co-locating their infrastructures, allowing us to speed up the rollout. Currently, we are in six cities across Nigeria: Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Kano, and Kaduna. Our plan, however, is to roll out across the country from the first day, and the opportunity for voice calls is already available from existing technology while we roll out on a continuous basis on the 5G infrastructure."

Onigbanjo said the MAFAB Communications' service would be their unique selling point. Answering a question on the accessibility of 5G on mobile devices, Onigbanjo said fundamentally, "Thanks to the NCC, the bands that were licensed in Nigeria are the universal 5G bands, and any phone that claims to have the 5G options should be able to connect to our network."
