Localhost, an international tech community, will be holding its annual conference tagged "Shifting Left" on Saturday, October 29, 2022.

Localhost is a community of Tech professionals with a major focus on Cloud, DevOps, and Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) . The community also includes technical and non-technical founders looking to stay up to date with DevOps culture and principles in driving organisational changes, and are looking to bring everyone, including the broader software community, together.

Andrew Burian, SRE Director at Dapperlabs, will be giving the keynote speech at the conference. Other speakers expected at the conference are Marcelo Mendonça(Brazil), SRE Engineer at Dapperlabs; Hila Fish, Senior DevOps Engineer at WiX; Dolapo Toki(Canada), SRE Engineer at Dapperlabs; Trista Pan, Cofounder & CTO of SphereEx.

In a brief interview with Techpoint Africa, Adedayo Akinpelu, a senior site reliability engineer and founder of Localhost, discussed what Localhost is, why this year's conference is tagged shifting left, and their expectations for the event.

According to Adedayo, Localhost came into being in 2017 due to the need to collaborate and share ideas with fellow professionals in the DevOps space, but most importantly creating an avenue for anyone else looking to pivot or start their career as a DevOps Engineer as it was a pretty new space in Nigeria as at then.

The community creates an environment for sharing of ideas, learning, and keeping up with the latest technologies and best practices in DevOps, as well as providing enthusiasts and people looking to start their career with all they need through their DevOps Accelerate programs which have gone to churn out hundreds of  DevOps engineers into the Nigeria tech market since its inception.

Today, the community has grown to about 5000 members in Nigeria with community leads spreading the DevOps gospel across the world in London, Poland, and Berlin, and looking to add more in the near future, according to Adedayo.

Localhost hosts a series of quarterly meetups at its various chapters, which usually involve people coming together to share ideas and knowledge.

Apart from hosting community tech events, Localhost hosts an accelerator program(DevOps Accelerate). According to Adedayo, "we train people in what they need to get started in the DevOps and cloud space. The program is aimed at people that want to start in the DevOps space, and it's a 3 months program."

On the choice of the theme, Shifting Left, Akinpelu said, "We have progressed from a point where people don't know what DevOps is to a point where people are now aggressively applying DevOps culture in their company to a point where we are now talking about how to apply DevOps culture to scale their infrastructure as a company.

We have reached a point where companies, employees, and everybody now understand the importance of a DevOps culture. We want everybody to have a shift in mindset,

Usually, DevOps is like an afterthought. Now, Shifting Left is mainly bringing organizations to shift their mindsets from applying DevOps at the end of their software development lifecycle to thinking and applying DevOps principles right from the start ."

He concluded by saying, Shifting Left was inspired by a software testing approach, i.e. instead of testing at the end of your product development, you test from the beginning thereby quickly catching bugs and identifying unscalable patterns early. The aim of the conference is for people to share their different experiences on how they are being proactive rather than reactive with DevOps practices in their various organisations.

Who can attend the conference?

Software engineers, software testers, DevOps, cloud engineers, engineering managers, CTOs, and CEOs. Basically, everyone in the tech space because DevOps is a culture that people need to understand and imbibe.

What to expect?

A keynote session, breakout sessions, interactive/networking sessions, etc. It will be a convergence of thought leaders where people will learn best practices and implement them at their various organisations and also job opportunities will be shared on that day.

When and where will the event hold?
