Why is Elon Musk buying Twitter?

It's a new week, and we are back with Tuesday's episode of the Techpoint Africa Podcast. Top on our list — surprise, surprise — is the Twitter sale.

Yesterday, April 25, 2022, Twitter's board of directors announced that it had agreed to be acquired by an entity owned by Elon Musk, Tesla CEO, at approximately $44 billion. If you've been following this closely, then you also know that this means the microblogging platform is going private.

I'm not a capital markets expert, so I can't tell you if it was a good idea to hodl or not, but it seems all shareholders are getting money to the tune of $54.20 per share. Not a bad return, considering the price hovered around $50 to $52 until trading on Twitter stock was stopped due to the impending sale. Some interesting takes there.

Moving on, after Emmanuel's journey to the launch site of Google's Equiano Internet cable, it turns out it isn't landing until Friday, April 29, 2022. It didn't stop us from writing about it or talking about it, however. It's not every day that a cable that promises to allow you to download a 1GB file in less than 2 minutes lands on your shores.

There was quite some dust to raise here, including when all that Internet will get to the hinterlands, where some might argue it is needed the most.

Finally, Bolu, in his role as resident blockchain expert, discussed the University of Johannesburg's decision to begin issuing blockchain-based certificates to students to prevent fraud.

Although we don't yet know how they plan to carry out this plan, listening to Bolu's breakdown of how it could work out was quite instructive.

This nicely segues into the upcoming Techpoint Africa Blockchain Summit holding on May 21, 2022, at Four Points by Sheraton. Early bird tickets are still on sale till this Saturday, April 30, 2022. If the Web3 and blockchain world interest or confuse you, you should register here.

While you're doing that, don't forget to listen to all we discussed on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. You can also share your favourite snippets using the hashtag, #TechpointAfricaPodcast.
