We surely thought the pandemic was done! But apparently, it rages on with its ongoing global effects transforming the way we live, learn, and work across sectors. Our world has completely changed. What was once normal has become abnormal. And what was not normal, is what we now call ‘The New Normal’.

For young people, launching a career now in the wake of the unprecedented global economic downturn can be very scary. Entering the job market without any considerable experience or outstanding skill, can leave you feeling frustrated and unmotivated about work.

To kick-off a successful career, it would be helpful to first and foremost, give yourself momentum by investing your time in learning valuable skills that would help you succeed in this new world. Skills that would benefit your career now and in the future.

The Young Professional Scholarship program is an initiative of Growth Caza by BNET Learning that caters to this need. Its goal is to empower young professionals in Nigeria, who are interested in earning certifications and acquiring skills that are relevant in today’s world of work.

The Challenge

Employment for young people is crucial to achieve sustainable economic development. The entry of young skilled people in the productive sectors of an economy, enables the economy to sustain or increase its productivity and compete in the global marketplace. However, for a very long time, the problem of unemployment has been a challenge for youths in many developing countries including Nigeria.

While there is the challenge of discrepancy between the number of educated young people seeking employment and the availability of good-paying and rewarding jobs, there is also the added constraint of young people lacking essential skills, making them inadequately prepared for such roles.

The implication of this is that education alone is not enough to attract meaningful employment, as many trained young people don’t have skills that are relevant in today’s job market.

What then is the way forward?

How can young people successfully navigate their way around the problem?

The practical solution would be to invest in skill development courses and hands-on training programs to acquire required experience. But the high cost of these programs further presents a challenge for young people in the society.

The Opportunity

To tackle this problem and bridge the skill gap in the young professional labour force, The Young Professional Scholarship Program aims to provide training scholarships worth over $1,800 to 50 young professionals in Nigeria who have keen interest in Business Analysis, Data Analysis, Project Management, and Database Management. This scholarship is part of the Growth Caza By BNET Learning initiative to create access to valuable opportunities for individuals within the professional community.
