Techpoint Africa is organising the first edition of the Techpoint Academy Writer Edition, scheduled to take place between October 27 and 30, 2020. The 2020 Writer Edition is an immersive 4-day event that will explore the concepts of creative writing and investigative journalism.

During the program, participants and students will get an intensive hands-on introduction to the world of journalism and what it takes to be a great creative writer.

Fisayo Soyombo

Soyombo is best remembered as the Nigerian journalist who spent five days in a police cell as a suspect — and eight as an inmate in Ikoyi Prison — to track corruption in Nigeria’s criminal justice system, after which the authorities contemplated arresting him. He might also be remembered as the journalist who drove the equivalent of a stolen vehicle from Abuja to Lagos, passing through a whopping 86 checkpoints in a journey of over 1,600km that lasted a cumulative 28 hours 17 minutes.

In 2016, his brand of investigative reporting won him multiple awards: Maritime Economy category, African Media Initiative awards; overall prize, Wole Soyinka Award for Investigative Reporting; Hans Verploeg Newcomer of the Year category, Free Press Awards, Netherlands; and Journalist of the Year (Business and Economy Reporting), PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Media Excellence Awards.

Edima Ette is the Creative Director at Kedima Consulting. She is a writing tutor and a gifted storyteller. The author of Chinda Ella, she has also co-authored books like Beyond the Corner and I Wish I Knew This Before I Was Fourteen.

She has made the list of 100 Most Influential Young Nigerians for three years in a row.

A digital marketing and social media enthusiast, Eketi has worked with several local and international brands.

Eketi is the Co-founder of Meet A Need Empowerment Initiative, a non-profit with a goal to empower, educate, and alleviate the severe lack amongst the most underprivileged. An avid mental health advocate, she volunteers with Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative (MANI).

In her spare time, she travels, reads compulsively, sniffs new books, and admires red sunsets.

How to enrol

The Writer Edition of the Techpoint Academy will run physical and virtual classes simultaneously. While there are limited opportunities for the physical class, the virtual class is open to anyone connecting from any part of the world.
