MTN Ghana in trouble with the NCA

Ghana’s telecommunications regulator, the National Communications Authority (NCA), has sanctioned communications giant MTN Ghana for its failure to follow the regulator’s directives.

MTN Ghana had been ordered to submit a report on the network challenges it had faced within 24 hours of receiving the NCA’s directives but failed to do so.

According to the statement by the NCA, one of the challenges they failed to report was the inaccurate billing of subscribers when purchasing service bundles. Also, there were issues with MTN Ghana’s customer care lines being inaccessible to subscribers.

The NCA reported that they had been “inundated with complaints” from subscribers about  these issues which began on the 1st of December, 2019.

Although MTN Ghana had begun to compensate subscribers affected by these network issues, the NCA stated that the fines demanded were as a result of the company’s non-compliance with its directives.

Some of the sanctions imposed on the network operator include:

  • A daily fine of GHC10,000.00  for every day that MTN Ghana failed to submit the report the NCA demanded;
  • A fine of GHC50,000.00 for the mobile operator’s failure to give notice of the challenges with billing inaccuracies concerning subscribers’ issues with purchasing telecommunications service bundles to NCA as soon as it happened;
  • A fine of GHC50,000.00 for failing to report the inaccessibility of MTN Ghana’s customer care lines to the NCA immediately it was discovered.

MTN Ghana has been given until the close of business on Monday the 9th of December, 2019 to pay the fines.
