The Lagos State Government unveiled the Ready Set Work (RSW) training initiative yesterday. The RSW training is an internship program designed for 12,000 students in their final and penultimate years in tertiary institutions across the state, that will run from July 1 to September 16, 2017.
According to the Special Adviser to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode on Education, Mr. Obafela Bank-Olemoh, the training which is geared towards raising work-ready graduates with the necessary skills and attitude needed to add value to the society.
Participants will be selected from Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Lagos State College of Health Science, Lagos State Polytechnic, Lagos State University, Michael Otedola College of Education, and the University of Lagos.
Since the beginning of the Ambode-led administration, the Lagos state government has made more concerted efforts towards promoting entrepreneurship and skill acquisition than ever before. The government has launched several initiatives, including; Code Lagos, Educate Lagos and now the RSW initiative. However, despite the beautiful ideas behind these initiatives we are yet to see any tangible results from them.
The need for a symbiotic relationship between the government and the private sector
A lot of government projects could have gone a long way if the private sector played active roles in them at the developmental stages. Code Lagos is a good initiative and entities like Switch Innovation, forLoop and Andela could have played huge roles to make sure the program is successful.
We cannot ignore the influence and resources the private sector can contribute to our country. Everywhere in the world, development is championed by a strategised effort from both parties.The government needs to look into how the private sector can plug in and partner with them to help catalyse these initiatives for scalability and sustainability so that the aims of these projects can be achieved.
A partnership between the government and the private sector will go a long way in the successful execution of several on-going initiatives. Partnering with the private sector will also help keep the government on their toes.

It is not clear why there is friction between the government and private sector, however, we implore the Lagos government to look into a sustainable relationship with the private sector especially in the tech environment.
